Connor and Cayden Long: When you love, you win

If you haven’t heard about the Long brothers yet, you’re in for a treat.

Connor is 9 years old and Cayden is 7. They compete together in triathlons. In fact, they recently won Sports Illustrated Kids’ SportsKids of the Year Award.

You see Cayden has Cerebral Palsy and is unable to walk or talk. And Connor was so determined to include his younger brother in sports that, about a year and a half ago, he decided to include him in his very first triathlon. Connor swam pulling Cayden behind him on a raft. He biked with Cayden in a trailer. And pushed him in a stroller while he ran. They didn’t win the race, but they had a wonderful time together. Since then, the brothers have competed together in many more triathlons. They may not win any races, but they have won a lot of hearts and inspired thousands along the way.

When asked what he thinks about when he starts a race Connor said, “Finishing. Not first, second, or third. Just being proud that we finished. When I see [Cayden] smiling and laughing, that means he’s having a good time.

The Long brothers teach us that when we love, we win. Even when we lose.

  1. Hey Cass! We just held the MetroWest Special Olympics here at my school Framingham State and it was so amazing! This was the third year I volunteered and I was actually the volunteer coordinator this year! But volunteering at these games just changes your outlook on life. These kids are so happy to be there and just have the chance to compete. They don’t care if they win or lose because they have completed something. It is a great thing to be a part of! I have read this story before and she is right guys- have a tissue ready! These brothers are so inspiring and just move your soul! Great story to share Cass!

  2. Cassandra — you were right. The tissue is essential. I’m sharing this story on my blog today! Thank you.
